ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at a particular aspect of the internationalisation process, namely the influence of Brazilian policy instruments on multilateral institutions. It aims to understand to what extent Brazilian actors have been involved in the formulation of international norms and how the production of these norms contributed to change in multilateral institutions. The chapter focuses on the engagement of Brazilian actors in the food and agriculture organization and the community of Portuguese-Speaking countries. It also aims to shed light on the role of multilateral institutions as arenas for the establishment of norms in food security and as intermediaries for the transfer of Brazil's policy instruments in the field. International organisations are places of political interaction and of collective structuring of expertise and authority, thereby fostering spaces for the production and circulation of international 'best practices' and proposals for reforming national policies.
