ABSTRACT

In Chapter 14, “The Worldwide Spread of ‘Herbal Highs’: The Case of Kratom”, Jessica Neicun, Darshan Singh, and Eduardo Cinosi explore the upsurge of ‘herbal highs’ and how they have resurged once more after their initial peak in the 1960s. Attention has been paid to the case of kratom in terms of both recreational use and therapeutical potential. The authors explore both the clinical presentation and the addictive components of this group of substances while providing a general overview of kratom use in the scope of the opioid epidemic.
