ABSTRACT

This chapter is based on one school's experience of implementing a multicultural policy. It is of particular interest as the school was virtually all white. Multicultural education in all-white schools is a topic of some concern. The headteacher felt that the teachers were good at integrating art, craft, and design into a topic in progress and at devising related assembly topics. The teachers' commitment to the topic was considerable. It has been suggested that 'improving the stock of special knowledge available to the primary school teacher and the qualities of teaching deployed in the school are central to the improvement of the standards in primary education. Recent research carried out since the publication of the Swann Report found little evidence of multicultural education being introduced in schools outside inner-city areas. Despite the Swann Committee's recommendation that multicultural education should permeate all schools, it would seem that the proposed reforms have largely foundered in predominantly white and rural areas.
