ABSTRACT

The magnetic fluids are used mostly in magnetic fluid seals and also magnetic fluid gaskets, employed in different areas of engineering, including aerospace, electrical engineering and biotechnological branches. Of considerable importance are the strength and kinetic properties of these devices. The magnetic fluid membrane is a droplet of a magnetic colloid overlapping the cross-section of a pipe with the inner diameter of ~1.5 cm as a result of the stabilising effect of the heterogeneous magnetic field. Experiments were carried out using the magnetic fluids employed in engineering in the form of a colloidal solution of single-domain particles of magnetite Fe3O4 in kerosene and in organic silicon. The difference between the experimental results is explained by the dependence of the elasticity of the ponderomotive type on the special features of the viscous flow of the magnetic fluid during displacement of the membrane.
