ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book critically examines the current research to date into digital piracy in order to better present a clear and concise account of 'the good', 'the bad', and 'the unclear'. It suggests that widely different approaches to mapping how digital piracy has impacted upon the creative and cultural industries. The book demonstrates that dated notions of how music generates revenue must be updated to accommodate new modes of music listening. It explores unique approaches to understanding digital piracy engagement, coming as they do from different disciplines. The book argues that online deviance in the form of digital piracy is related to offline deviance too, with the implication that digital piracy may be a gateway to more serious offending. It also demonstrates the core contributions made by criminologists in understanding digital piracy.
