ABSTRACT
Using the Bowtie Methodology (BM) means to implement two well-known assessment methods: Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) and Event Tree Analysis (ETA). In reality, there are actually two different tools with the same name: Bowtie Methodology. The first one is used mostly in the oil and petroleum industry and the second one is applicable to all industries. The first one is a method (not a methodology!) that mostly deals with hazard and risk protection in production systems. The second one is a methodology that is largely based on probability, statistics, reliability, and Boolean algebra. This book explains the second one because it is a methodology that covers both Pre- and Post-Event analysis and, as such, is a holistic approach to safety, quality, and risk analysis.
In this chapter, introductory explanations and the background of the applications of BM are given.
