ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces a much needed research space for critical qualitative researchers who seek to (un)cover the myriad complexities that are apparent amongst Black communities within post-secondary educational spaces. A different perspective is offered that ultimately illuminates how one can utilize hermeneutic phenomenology and then connect it to critical theories and approaches in order to investigate the lived experiences of Black students. Overall, this work underscores phenomenology as both philosophy and method. It also illustrates how one can not only use phenomenology in a critical manner but also “call” on “unconventional” texts to show their phenomenon of pursuit.
