ABSTRACT

This chapter helps the reader to extend their attention beyond meaning negotiations in interactions to generic abilities and skills needed for intercultural communication. It explores what these generic abilities and skills are, before looking into how to develop them through intercultural education and training. The chapter looks at some key concepts and models in the development of Intercultural Communicative Competence (ICC) in foreign language teaching and learning. It reviews a number of key models and approaches in intercultural learning. The chapter focuses on 'how to communicate effectively, appropriately and at the same time, to build relationships', the three main goals of intercultural communication. It looks at a number of factors and skills that lead to successful intercultural communication and intercultural learning that facilitates the development of ICC. The chapter introduces some major theories and models in the study of intercultural communication which have implications for our understanding of intercultural issues and the development of competence in intercultural encounters.
