ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book contributes to the growing body of literature that has begun to highlight positive attributes of Black male achievement at the secondary and post-secondary levels. It focuses on the influence of family, school culture, college readiness and attendance and college choice and Black males. The book includes discussions on multiple forms of identity, mentoring, cultural capital and trust. It describes the dialogue focusing on the positive stories of not only these ten young Black males but also how trusting the process can help foster academic and social achievement in all young male students of color as they transition from boys to men. Understanding and nurturing the social-emotional, racial and gender identity of young Black men was an essential component to positive academic and social achievement.
