ABSTRACT

2Elastomer composites are complex multicomponent system whose properties depend on the type of elastomer (or mixtures of elastomers) as well as on the type of fillers and ingredients used. This chapter briefly presents the main approaches for widening the application areas of rubber composites by chemical modification of already-known elastomers. The focus is mostly on hydrogenation of elastomers, given that one of the oldest possibilities for modification of elastomers is taken into consideration. Attention has been paid to the possibilities for using renewable sources for obtaining elastomers with new properties by epoxidation of natural rubber latex for grafting antioxidants onto the elastomer macromolecule by means of grafting copolymerization.
