ABSTRACT

At the beginning of emotional problem-focused-rational emotive behavioural coaching (EPF-REBC), coaches are working with a specific example of the coachee's target problem. The phrase 'dialectical engagement' refers to a discourse between two or more people holding different points of view about a subject but wishing to establish the truth through reasoned arguments. The effects of dialectical engagement – coachees should understand the emotional, behavioural and cognitive components of the disturbed response to the adversity that features in their problem. To facilitate change, coaches need to help coachees implement a number of cognitive, imagery, behavioural and emotive tasks to help them achieve their problem-based goals. The best way for coachees to strengthen a flexible and/or non-extreme attitude is to act in ways consistent with it. Homework tasks, regularly completed, are among the best ways that coachees can achieve their problem-based goals.
