ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses mainly on obstacles to which coachees respond in an unhealthy way, emotionally, behaviourally and cognitively. The goal of helping coachees in rational emotive behavioural coaching (REBC) is to help them deal with obstacles so that they cease to be obstacles: coachees can then return to the business of pursuing their objective in development-focused-rational emotive behavioural coaching (DF-REBC) or their goal in problem-focused-rational emotive behavioural coaching (PF-REBC). Anything that is said about identifying, understanding and dealing with actual obstacles can also be applied to helping the coachee to anticipate, understand and deal with potential obstacles. Once the coach has identified what type of obstacle the coachee has encountered, their next step is to decide with the coachee what to do with it. When the coach and coachee decide to work on the obstacle in REBC, their first priority is to identify the obstacle and decide whether it indicates a practical problem or an emotional problem.
