ABSTRACT

This chapter considers guilt, an emotion that can have a negative effect on a coachee's life and their participation in coaching. Guilt as an emotion can have an inhibiting effect on people's lives. When people experience it, they tend to avoid taking risks in life in case they do the wrong thing. They are fearful of putting themselves first, for fear of appearing and/or being selfish or because they may hurt others by doing so. As a result, they tend to take the line of least resistance in life. Although the coachee may have a guilt problem, they may not experience the emotion of guilt very often in life. This is because they will act in a way that is designed to spare them facing what for them would be adversities, which if they did face, they would feel guilty.
