ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the author's work with couples, Lee and Isaac, who were lost in old unspoken relational trauma. It describes the mutual activities that served as a natural individual bilateral stimulation (BLS) that helped release emotions that had been frozen in their body. The chapter describes how the relational psychodynamic approach set the tone for attention to containing the emotional whole, thus increasing the attachment bond in the couple. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) helps to quickly locate emotional blocks and trauma in order to focus on current situations and the altered cognitive belief system to which they are related. The chapter describes the benefit of approaching couples with individual EMDR in the service of conjoint therapy and highlights the importance of an individual EMDR approach in the presence of both partners. With Isaac and Lee, the author employed a mixed technique, in which two preparatory sessions were done together.
