ABSTRACT

It is over 100 years since Christian Bohr and collaborators published papers on the sigmoidality1 of concentrationresponse relations at equilibrium, synagics, for O2-binding to hemoglobin (Bohr 1904a,b; Bohr et al. 1904). A re-plot of their data is given in Fig. 15.1. The experimental results in Fig. 15.1 display a clear deviation from load synagics. This deviation is not the so-called ‘Bohr-effect’. The Bohr-effect is the rightward shift of the whole hemoglobin-O2 binding curve due to respiratory acidosis as demonstrated in Fig. 15.1 by increasing CO2-tension.
