A consequence, then, of John Donne's wonder at the thought of God becoming man without ceasing to be God is that there are times when he views the Son and not the whole Trinity as the ultimate self-revelation of the godhead. For Donne Christ's identity was confirmed by his own 'manifold Miracles' as well as by '[t]he evident Word itself', a neat pun that exploits the belief that the Son is the utterance of the Father.
