ABSTRACT

This chapter looks briefly at the role played by governments and state authorities around the globe. Outside Israel governments are not really involved in the kosher market, and outside Southeast Asia the same can largely be said of halal. In the UK, and across Europe more generally, the only national regulation related to kosher and halal production occurs at the time of killing during animal slaughter. However, in most non-Muslim countries the research suggests that many producing and exporting businesses would like to see more government involvement, particularly when exporting products to markets in which kosher and/or halal are important. In Malaysia, the Danish state is actively involved in assisting Danish companies in halal matters through embassy representation, but this involvement is fairly recent, and not all businesses are aware of this service. Denmark recognises the importance of deepening halal understanding and practice – especially in connection with abattoirs and the export of food products for Muslim countries and groups.
