ABSTRACT
There were group workers, community social workers, patch teams, social work assistants and home helps, all of whom in turn worked closely with all kinds of local voluntary groups, many of which were subsidized by the council. The notion of 'preventative work' provided a wide and generous rubric for all kinds of community activities. Supervision discussions with her focused on the issues we all faced in providing a service to the local community, and her comments were invariably valuable and respectful. Battersea was a place throbbing with community activity. There were many overlapping community networks drawing ideas from one another and swopping resources. Many of those who worked in the social work department were part of these networks. The Wandsworth Community Health Council had a fiery secretary and was promoting, amongst many other schemes, an exhibition on working women and childcare in the borough with the photography co-op.
