ABSTRACT

Hadron therapy centres are still rare, but as treatment is promising there is a global demand for more facilities. Due to the complexity of a particle therapy facility, precise data are required to most accurately define the number of potential patients. Therefore, several epidemiologic studies have been performed in Italy, France and Austria. This chapter gives a short overview in planning, staffing and commissioning such a dedicated centre. Issues related to the extension of a radiotherapy department/centre with a single-room proton facility installed next to an existing radiotherapy unit are not covered in this overview. It must be emphasised, that in order to have a competent group of employees at the time of commissioning and first patient treatment, selection of candidates and educational programmes must start immediately upon the fundamental decision of realizing the project.
