ABSTRACT

This chapter analyses the bases and articulation of the two communication models to come out of 15M. One is linked to online political activism, corresponding to the first phase of the 15M movement. The other is associated with Podemos, the political party created in January 2014 that is closely linked to the indignados. The chapter describes the current situation in the field of political communication, which is characterised by the growing role of social media and the continuing predominance of the mainstream media. One of the central tenets of activist logic and the overturn of media logic put into practice by the 15M activists was to turn around the way the agenda was set. The chapter reviews the effects of digital technologies on political organisation, mobilisation and communication. It concludes by presenting aspects they have in common and the innovations they introduce into political communication, particularly their contributions to democracy.
