ABSTRACT

Nothing is more valuable to any change effort than the people involved in it. People are what put any other resource into action. Why people do what they do is one of life's enduring mysteries. The rules described in this chapter address some of the more important observations about people, particularly when they are engaged in a change effort. Some of these people will be participants seeking the change. The rules in the chapter show how each touches on some aspect of these themes. People's desire to be helpful and the importance of people receiving acceptance and gaining confidence are rooted in these elements, as are the factors that lead to action or inaction. The process of change necessarily involves rejecting the routine in favor of the new, the different, or the unknown. There is no doubt about it, the work of change is work. It is easy for people to feel overwhelmed or directionless.
