ABSTRACT

Regensburg's output of medieval mural painting must have been enormous, though little survives. Most of Regensburg's medieval manuscripts are kept in the Bayerische Staats bibliothek in Munich. Medieval relics functioned as symbols of saintly life, served as instruments of intercession, and possessed a certain power as defined by the church and the believer. Medieval sensibility advocated veneration of the remains of the deceased who was considered holy and could intercede for the faithful before God. The legend of Saint Ursula told in the Golden Legend reads like a medieval romance and forms the basis for an incredible reliquary room in Cologne. The concept of the "Renewal of the Prankish Empire" occurs in the Carolingian and Ottonian periods of medieval Germany. Germany was one of the earliest regions in medieval Europe to develop large-scale sculpture. Medieval Rostock also had a considerable number of secular buildings, as was common in important Hansa towns.
