ABSTRACT

The new visibility of trans issues is a key marker of the major change in the position of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and allied people (LGBTI +) people in the early twenty-first century – perhaps the most obvious and dramatic feature of the new landscape of sexuality and gender. The LGBT world as a whole was becoming increasingly diverse and complex. The history of sexuality is a history of regulation but it has also been a history of many forms of resistance and agency. The British legislative reforms between 1997 and 2010 provided the framework for equal citizenship for LGBT people. LGBT people were moving from the margins to the hearts of some of the most dynamic and forward-looking cities and towns in Britain. The absence of parenting rights for lesbians underlined the vulnerability of LGBT people in ensuring custody of their children.
