ABSTRACT

Speaking before sleep specialists from around the United States, Dr. Kohler began his presentation of August, 2014, in St. Petersburg, Florida, by exhorting them to benefit from the many advantages of using hypnosis. Dr. Kohler also addressed some of the unfounded fears and concerns that many in the general public have. A significant limitation to the use of hypnosis in sleep medicine is the lack of awareness of the potential utility of this valuable technique and the lack of sleep specialists trained in hypnosis. In "Sleep Drives Metabolite Clearance from the Adult Brain," published in Science, lead authors Lulu Xie and Hongyi Kang describe results that appear to suggest that during sleep the brain cleans itself. Dr. Kohler believes that hypnosis may in the future provide a way to assist at least some patients with sleep apnea, eliminating their need for continuous positive airway pressure or other, more intrusive, treatment.
