ABSTRACT

A few years after Romanes had performed more gemmule experiments Charles Darwin came to visit him at Cornwall Terrace, Regent's Park in 1881. After the news of Darwin's death Francis Galton went to the Royal Society to arrange that a request should be telegraphed to Darwin's family by the president in the name of the Royal Society asking if they would consent to an interment in Westminster Abbey. The funeral should be attended by a deputation from all the learned societies of Britain. Galton's biographer and most promising student Karl Pearson wrote in his four volumes of Life of Francis Galton that Galton privately breathed a deep sigh of relief at Darwin's death. Two years later in 1884 Gregor Mendel died from chronic kidney disease. The funeral was a quiet affair compared to Darwin's.
