ABSTRACT

On July 8, 1994 the supreme Leader of the North Korean nation since its formation passed away. This chapter explores how this single most important person in the history of the nation, as well as his son Kim Jong Il and, to a lesser degree, his first wife Kim Jong Suk. It exemplifies how Kim Il Sung makes himself present for the patriots, who have fearlessly left their Fatherland behind to complete their mission deep inside enemy territory. It examines three titles, which are legends in kurimchaek form published after 1998. They are Illustrated Legends of Paektu Kwangmyongsong; The Little General Descends Crane Peak; and Illuminating the Cloudy Sky. The majority of the images portray Crane Peak in its natural surroundings: below the shining stars, surrounded by clouds and above a wooden cabin, where Mother and Son live while Father is away on a mission in the Paektu mountain.
