ABSTRACT

Hyperpigmentation is one of the most common cosmetic causes for consultation in dermatology for all skin types but especially for those with dark skin or mixture of ethnicities. Chemical peeling is performed by the application of one or more exfoliating agents to the skin to produce controlled partial-thickness ablation, creating in essence a type of controlled wound. The process and the technique of a peeling procedure are largely determined by the chemical's nature and the concentration of the applied peeling substance. The most important post-peel measurement once the skin is re-epithelialized is use of ultraviolet protection and visible light protection by lifelong application of an appropriate sunscreen. This chapter presents the application of a topical depigmenting agent like hydroquinone, tretinoin, or glycolic acid (GA). It discusses some of peeling agents used for treatments. Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), Salicylic acid (SA) and lipo-hydroxy acid (LHA) are widely used for peeling properties.
