ABSTRACT

The author decided to learn to write about the teacher's work and also considered how it should be in any efforts at school improvement. There are 5 C's to be learned and practiced. They are context matters, commitments take time to develop, capacity of members grows over time, content needs balance with process and challenges are endemic to any social enterprise. Wenger introduced the idea of "communities of practice", focusing attention on those who practice and the importance of building relationships among the people in their work. There is now much agreement that the teacher is the key figure in any changes needed in a school. It has taken much time before there has been an acceptance that teacher knowledge must be made public so that it can be shared, critiqued and verified. New media tools and social networks have begun to promote the idea of professional knowledge and the ways in which professional development are organized.
