ABSTRACT

The Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland had been founded in 1897 and the Motor Union six years later. These organizations, joined by cycling associations, determined that the future of the motor industry and the transport of the country depended upon improved roads. When the Departmental committee issued its report it proposed that for purposes of administration all roads throughout Britain should be divided into three classes. They are: national roads, county roads and district roads. The administration of the first category should become the responsibility of a special department of the Local Government Board. The second category should be under the jurisdiction of a body to be known as the County Highways Board, whilst the third remained in the care of District Councils. English makers are increasing and are steadily evolving a car suitable for English roads, and combining the speed of the French cars with the stability of our own.
