ABSTRACT

Independent learning is where learners work with reduced input from a teacher, and the course of their learning process is consequently less predictable and more governed by individual curiosity. Generation means creating something rather than receiving it passively. Laboratory studies have shown that a list of items that is read out or shown to a participant is less well remembered than words that they generate themselves. Discovery learning is a particular type of active learning that involves pupils discovering information or concepts through enquiry rather than being given it directly. Active learning is sometimes assumed to require an element of physical activity, and there has been pressure put on teachers to include more movement-based activities in their teaching. Homework is perhaps the classic form of independent learning, and can of course be structured in a huge number of ways. It also takes up a lot of a young person's time out of school.
