ABSTRACT
The chapter discusses to a quantitative description of the Arabic vocabulary in Tariq ut-tahqiq. Most of the Arabic loan-words in a new persian text are easily discernible. The concept “Arabic loan-words” is used in the sense of words borrowed from or through Arabic into Persian, excluding words of Iranian origin. These words form the “Arabic vocabulary” (Va). With regard to the many factors of uncertainty due to differences in sample length, definitions of words and loan-words, etc., it is impossible to give these series of figures an exact interpretation, but they confirm, beyond any doubt, the conclusions drawn by Lazard of a steady increase of the Arabic loan-words in new persian texts from the tenth to the twelfth century, with certain variations according to genre and, perhaps, individual style. The transcription of the Arabic words follows their Persian pronunciation and spelling and is at times influenced by metrical considerations.
