ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the concept of action research communities and focuses on the extension of PLCs through the growth and expansion of action research within the PLC framework. It explores how action research communities should function, as well as the various roles for teachers, building administrators, and district administrators. According to DuFour, DuFour, and Eaker, a PLC's mission, vision, values, and goals form the four pillars of that learning community; they are the foundation upon which the learning community is built. Within an action research community (ARC), building leadership must focus on the level of overall commitment to fostering and promoting the necessary change in culture. Further, the leadership must focus on sustaining this commitment throughout the faculty and staff. Focusing on the school's mission and vision, all while leading by example, is paramount in sustaining these types of efforts.
