ABSTRACT

The construction sector is one of the most dangerous in the world, largely due to its special characteristics. One of every five fatal accidents (21.4%) in the EU in 2013 happened in the construction sector (EUROSTAT, 2013). Given the high number of fatalities in the sector, it is evident that safety management throughout the whole construction process must be improved. One of the main problems affecting the industry is the use of traditional methods both in the design of the projects and the execution of works. The methods used are based on 2D plans or drawings employed to identify potential risks and establish preventative measures (Hadikusumo & Rowlinson, 2002).
