ABSTRACT

At the heart of this book lies the thorny question of what job to pick. In this chapter there are three techniques that can help clients to identify some specific job ideas. In the first tool, clients are encouraged to dream a little, conjuring up a vision of one or more possible versions of themselves in the future. The process of vividly imagining themselves in different scenarios can help clients to identify the role that they want their career to play in their lives and can lead to some clear job ideas. The second tool introduced in this chapter aims to capture and capitalise on the insights that can be gained from daydreams, encouraging clients to note down any career-related daydreams they have and explore them with their career coach. In the final technique, a matching tool is introduced that helps individuals consider their work interests and personality and offers some suggestions of the kinds of work that are most likely to be fulfilling to certain types of people.
