ABSTRACT

This chapter offers specific insights, using empirical data, of the sources and uses of teaching and occupational knowledge as viewed from the perspectives of five participants each with her/his narrative. Beginning with OP5, a female teacher of art and design, and OP6, another female teacher in the travel and tourism sector, both in the further education sector, they elucidate approaches of 'experimentation and innovative flexibility' and 'the need to refresh industrial know-how and in teaching' respectively. In the higher education level, OP9, a female teacher of dental hygiene, used the notion of 'dental relevance' to help her engage with both her teaching and dental practice. Finally, at the professional level, OP16, a male consultant in Emergency Medicine, and OP19, a female deliverer of clinical training, explain the pedagogic relevance of 'social science and not pure science' and an eclectic journey into clinical medicine and teaching respectively.
