ABSTRACT

This chapter integrates and synthesizes the field data and analyses from the previous chapters of this book regarding Toyota's purpose, objectives and decisions are. Based on these syntheses and additional analyses, it draws conclusions. Where the analyses are inconclusive, the chapter offers implications of these inconclusive issues. The practical way of deciphering Toyota's manifest purpose is from the analyses of the pattern of priority ranking of objectives guiding Toyota's key decisions. The key determinants of Toyota's purpose are the strategic stakeholders, the contextual environment and the cultural beliefs and values. In 1935, Toyota's strongest stakeholders were its Japanese employees. In 1992, other important stakeholders appeared - customers, local societies, and suppliers. The view of relationship between Toyota's purpose and key objectives are plausible with the understanding that objectives are indeed rank-ordered in a hierarchical manner. The corporate purpose and key objectives of Toyota can be represented by a "Universe Model".
