ABSTRACT

Problem solving should be done every day as a whole class routine. It should also be done in small guided math groups and math workstations. When done in whole groups, the emphasis is on developing the habits of mind and ways of doing that good problem solvers need. Great problem solving is interwoven throughout the math block. The initial emphasis is to get everyone to understand the problem. In order to do this, they need to visualize and summarize the problem. The Problem Solving Math Workstation should be a permanent workstation throughout the year. It should be leveled. Students should be assessed at the beginning of the year to see where they are at and then continue on from there when working in the workstations. Throughout the year, students progress through the problem types at their own speed. There are also a variety of activities that should take place at the workstations.
