ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author aims to provide model for teachers a possible interpretation of a piece of literature so that they can see for themselves what kind of thinking college-and career-ready students need to be prepared to do. Students need to be able to infer and reach conclusions if they want to succeed in a career after they graduate from college. Drawing inferences has a lot to do with simply looking at words. The reason a college-ready reader, observer, or listener would want to draw inferences is because no author, actor, or orator writes, portrays, or says anything that does not have at least two levels of meaning. College- and career-ready students are able to read complex texts or data and draw inferences and conclusions by using analysis skills, critical thinking skills, and creative thinking skills to put them all together to form a final message.
