ABSTRACT

Mosquitoes are important pests of public health as they transmit important diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Japanese encephalitis, filariasis, yellow fever, and Zika virus, that affect half of the world’s population (mostly in tropical and subtropical regions) by inflicting illness and death, and physical, psychological, and monetary losses on them. Insecticides are the primary strategy to control mosquitoes carrying diseases. But prolong use of insecticides has led to the development of resistance in vectors and environment degradation. This has compelled researchers to look for eco-friendly alternative control methods so that the use of insecticides can be minimized. The genetically modified (GM) mosquito development program has public, legal, social, and safety concerns that need to be properly addressed, but certainly they are unlike GM crops.
