ABSTRACT

Broadly speaking, there are two different types of music in narrative media: diegetic music and non-diegetic music. Diegetic music may be heard in a scene depicting a party, a funeral, a sporting event, etc. The need for diegetic music should become obvious at scripting stage, and there will be implications for music selection and licensin. Any and all music of any style and form can be non-diegetic music, be it purely instrumental or songs. Social realism films, for example, have tended not to draw on extra-diegetic music in order not to tip towards melodrama or moralistic finger pointing. Some films use very little non-diegetic music, perhaps because there are many diegetic music entries or because the style of the film stipulates sparse scoring. A piece of music starts off as diegetic music and then, as the narrative progresses to the next scene, the same diegetic music continues.
