ABSTRACT

Many months after the authors crash and after he had finally come to some degree of acceptance about his changed self, the time came for discharge from the Wellington hospital. His time in hospital felt like an eternity and although the hospital staff had done their utmost to make his exercises challenging, it was now time for the real world, as he no longer suffered from any critical deficits. The exercises in the hospital were mainly done under laboratory conditions and were therefore untested in actual situations. Unlike university or high school, he could see little reason for any nostalgia when graduating from hospital, as it contained few happy memories. On the day of his discharge, he woke up in the morning to partake in his last hospital meal. After finishing his bread and butter, he packed up his meagre belongings and checked that nothing was left under the bed or behind the cupboard.
