ABSTRACT

Strategies for addressing the needs of boys in the various programs, projects and prescriptions in the area can be discussed in five major categories. First, there are those disciplinary responses which attempt to control the anti-social fallout of boys' behaviour, like bullying and harassment. Other strategies consider the knowledge content needed if boys are to understand how they are influenced by contemporary masculinity. A third approach develops boys' ability to discuss and reflect on their experience and how it is influenced by their social context. A fourth tries to develop skills such as interpersonal communication which might assist boys in their relations with others. Finally, another approach emphasises the need to deal with boys' attitudes, values, emotions and sensitivities through strategies approximating personal therapy. This chapter considers each of these broad kinds of strategy and what they have to offer as ways of dealing with the issues of boys' education.
