ABSTRACT

Chest drain placement is one of the most common surgical procedures performed in routine clinical practice. It is generally placed in the 4thor 5th intercostal space in the mid-axillary line and the recommended site for insertion is the “safe triangle.” Most common indications of the chest tube are pneumothorax, hemothorax, and pleural effusion. The stepwise procedure along with complications and postprocedure care are described in this chapter.
