ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 lays out the context of Dr. Zakir Naik and his Islamic Research Foundation (IRF). It observes that the lineage of Zakir Naik stretches back to the nineteenth century, to Indian Muslims like Raḥmat Allāh Kairanāwī and Wazīr Khān. Chapter 6 also shows how the legacy of Kairanāwī passed to Naik via Ahmed Deedat, a South African Muslim of Indian descent whose multi-media da‘wa ministry was based on his use of the concept of “comparative religion.” Chapter 6 also situates Naik and the founding of the IRF in the context of Mumbai in the 1980s and 1990s.
