ABSTRACT

Education is an interdisciplinary field of study that draws on Philosophy, Psychology, Sociology, and Critical Theory, and Cultural Studies, to which the authors are adding Cultural Studies. The Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education is a 'must pass' qualification in an educational system described as 'brutal', so parents see the expense required for tutors as essential. The richest tutors are young, attractive to their students because of their fashionable image, and inspirational because of the link they make between enterprise, affluence and educational achievement. In higher education in the UK, many projects are actively working with 'Students as Partners' (SaP), a term which describes students and teachers working together on the co-creation of learning. 'SaP' as a strategic response to the need to repurpose 'student engagement' through embedding partnerships in institutional cultures is seen as a values-driven and 'troublesome' threshold concept.
