ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how and why distributed denial of service (DDoS) follows Kurzweil's concept of acceleration evolution. The first-generation DDoS has been effective at winning malware battles, but is still short of crippling the critical infrastructures of a Smart City. The second-generation DDoS will be very innovation-intensive and prolific, and will breed and spread everywhere like ivy. Cybercrime will not only tag along the latest disruptive technologies, but, as in medicine, it will force its way into the healthy systems of most lucrative companies. The third generation of DDoS is around the corner, but it will be fully functional in the next decade. DDoS attacks were using botnets to hack target devices. The first massive DDoS was an Internet of Things-based botnet. DDoS payload vectors will be hovering over the Smart City like hyenas over a cadaver, trying to penetrate the city's Smart Grid.
