ABSTRACT

In Chapter 3, readers will find a rationale and methods for encouraging children to take part in World Music Pedagogy through the participatory musicking dimensions of Engaged and Enactive Listening. The chapter describes the types of experiences that comprise participatory musicking, including singing, playing rhythms, playing melodies, and moving in ways that represent the music. Specific suggestions about selecting musical materials for participatory musicking are provided, considering such issues as the skills of the children and the content of song-based repertoire. One process for designing lessons of Engaged and Enactive Listening is described, beginning with brainstorming all musical possibilities and ending with organizing the various selected activities in a logical sequence. Suggestions are provided for ways to involve students in decision-making processes to maximize student participation and engagement. The chapter closes with an interview of an elementary music teacher who teaches in a very diverse school in Washington State.
