ABSTRACT

Chapter 6 examines the ways in which music can be a gateway to understanding culture through World Music Pedagogy. Integration can be inspired by the music itself, including by whom, where, and when the music is performed. It may also be inspired by the culture from which the music originated or is currently performed, including geography, language, social practices, and much more. The chapter also provides examples of means for connecting children’s learning of music with their experiences in other subjects, which may include the arts, technology, physical education, language arts, social studies, math, and science. Ethnomusicological concepts such as authenticity, representation, and context are addressed in depth in this chapter. In addition, suggestions for ways in which culture-bearers can be successfully incorporated into the classroom are provided. The chapter ends with an interview of an American public school teacher who was raised in Japan and who shares music from many parts of the world with her elementary students.
