ABSTRACT

Continuing with the concepts introduced in the previous chapter, Chapter 9 provides additional strategies to change our perspective and promote moral re-engagement. We consider the various roles that we might play that go beyond perpetrator and victim to also include follower, bystander, and upstander. Exercises and case studies encourage the reader to “think out of the box” by examining creative or alternative courses of action. Our ability to identify a moral challenge can be enhanced by attending to gut feelings, applying the “New York Times” and “Madison Avenue” tests, as well as recognizing when we strive to keep our actions secret or seek the approval of others. Finally, humanizing the victim, assuming responsibility, and using objective language provide additional strategies to re-engage. Readers are encouraged to apply the theories and strategies discussed in this book to their own moral challenges.
