ABSTRACT
In both the prologue and the reprise of “Sante Fe,” Jack sings about the clean air in Sante Fe, New Mexico. Clean air is what economists call a public good, which is a product that satisfies two properties. First, the quality of a public good doesn’t diminish when an additional person consumes it. Second, it is difficult (or impossible) to exclude people from consuming a public good, even if that person is unwilling to pay for it. 1
